<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for suppressing sound-signal amplitude, which gives very small quality deterioration of reproduced sounds even if strong amplitude suppression is taken place. <P>SOLUTION: When the sound-signal waveform variation shifts toward a large direction, the amplitude is compressed in a logarithmic or logarithmic-like manner. When the direction of the signal waveform variation reverses, the compression action is stopped, and the continuing waveform is output starting from the amplitude level shown at the stoppage of the compression action. If the amplitude variation shifts toward a large direction again, the logarithmic compression or logarithmic-like compression is started, and such processes are repeated.
