<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording device and a recording method which can obtain medium transportation information and can be controlled even when applying a mark to a medium with ink to be made invisible by heat treatment and, moreover, can erase the mark which has been no longer needed, in the recording device in which the medium is heated. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A fine mark is applied to the back surface of the recording medium 17 by using a serrated roller 43 with the ink MI which becomes invisible by heat treatment at a critical temperature or more. A controller 60 successively obtains an image on a region to which the mark is applied from an image sensor 51, performs image correlation processing of the image to obtain the medium transportation information, and controls a transportation motor 53 on the basis of the obtained medium transportation information. An upstream platen 36 and a recording platen 37 heated by heaters 54, 55 heat the recording medium 17 at a temperature lower than the critical temperature. The recording medium 17 to which the recording is applied by a recording head 21 is heated at a temperature of the critical temperature or higher by a downstream side platen 38 heated by a heater 56.
