<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hardness testing machine capable of performing a step of forming a recess and a step of observing a sample or the recess without performing switching operation of an indenter and an objective lens. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A hardness tensing machine 1 includes: an illumination device 81a for irradiating the surface of a sample S with light; a CCD camera 81b for inputting light reflected from the surface of the sample S and observing a recess formed on the sample S by an indenter 52 and the periphery of the recess; and an objective lens 73a for observing the surface of the sample S. The objective lens 73a is disposed so that the optical axis of light entering the surface of the sample S and the movement axis of the indenter 52 intersect in at least one point.
