PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder for automatically moving a stacking tray down to an intermediate position to smoothly load paper while securing safety even when a control program goes out of control during paper loading work. SOLUTION: The great-capacity paper feeder is stored in an image forming device or connected to the image forming device for supplying printing paper to the image forming device. It includes the staking tray for stacking the printing paper, a driving means for moving the stacking tray up and down, and an upper face detecting sensor for detecting the upper face of the paper stacked on the stacking tray or the upper face of the stacking tray even when the stacking tray is pulled out. When it does not perform paper feeding operation of feeding the printing paper one by one to the image forming device, it automatically moves the stacking tray a certain distance down from the position of the upper face detecting sensor and holds it there.
