PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen production method from water by irradiation of a p-type semiconductor oxide with light, in particular a method of efficiently producing hydrogen by using an aqueous solution containing an electron donating compound donating proton. SOLUTION: Hydrogen is efficiently produced by irradiating the p-type semiconductor oxide immersed in the aqueous solution containing the electron donating compound donating proton and water with light energy. The electron donating compound donating proton is preferably a nitrogen-containing conjugated compound and as the nitrogen-containing type compound, one or a combination of one or more selected from an amidine derivative, a nitrogen-containing six-membered ring aromatic group and a nitrogen-containing five-membered ring aromatic group is more preferable.
