A compound represented by formula (I) or a salt thereof useful as a fluorescent probe for use in the measurement of protease which undergoes immediate structural change from a nonfluorescent closed-ring form to a strongly fluorescent open-ring form by hydrolysis of an acyl group and provides excellent quantitative determination. In formula (I), R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a substituent; R2 to R7 independently represents a hydrogen atom, a hydroxy group, an alkyl group, or a halogen atom; R8 and R9 independently represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group; X represents a C1-C3 alkylene group; and R10 represents an acyl group.
