PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an earth retaining wall with a small-shaped buttress to have an improved self-supporting property, namely, to be able to resist a larger earth pressure on a rear face, and to provide its construction method. SOLUTION: An earth retaining wall body 10 having a form of an underground wall is constructed using a sheet pile 13 from the surface of the ground where an excavation section is formed. Buttress insertion holes are formed through excavation on the front side of the earth retaining wall body 10 and in the direction crossing the earth retaining wall body 10. The buttress 11 is inserted in the buttress insertion holes. A jack 12 for pressing the buttress 11 downward with a reaction force against the earth retaining wall body 10 is attached. By applying the downward pressure to the buttress 11 with the jack, an outward pressure against the earth pressure on the rear face is applied to the earth retaining wall body 10.
