PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology for evading detrimental effects in the case where abnormal conditions arise in oil pressure which controls a mechanical compression ratio. SOLUTION: In the variable compression ratio internal combustion engine, a mechanical compression ratio can be varied by controlling oil pressure in a first and a second oil-pressure chambers 20a, 20b. The internal combustion engine includes: a communicative oil-passage 23 allowing communication of the first oil-pressure chamber 20a with the second oil-pressure chamber 20b; a shutoff valve 24 which shuts off the communicative oil-passage 23 at normal time, and releases the shutoff of the communicative oil-passage 23 at abnormal time where the oil-pressures of the first and the second oil-pressure chambers 20a, 20b become uncontrollable; and a check valve 25 which allows the oil in the communicative oil-passage 23 to flow only in the direction to increase the oil pressure which keeps away a cylinder block 3 from a crankcase 12.
