<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pantograph failure detecting method that uses a sensor to detect a force acting on an insulator arranged between a fixed metal fitting and a rigid trolley wire for failure detection at sliding by enabling the rigid trolley wire for failure detection to slide all over the whole width of a pantograph contact strip without using an image, and uses a monitor to monitor a failure in the pantograph, and to provide a system of the method. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the pantograph failure detecting method, the sensor 15 is installed which is arranged between the fixing metal fitting 16 for supporting the rigid trolley wire 19 for failure detection and the insulator 14 so as to detect a force tilting the insulator 14 or a vertical force or an inclination of the insulator. The rigid trolley wire 19 for failure detection is arranged under the insulator 14 so as to slide over the whole width of the contact strip 1B of the pantograph 1. When there is a stepped abrasion or a partial drop of the contact strip 1B of the pantograph 1 or breakage of the bellow spring 3 or restoring spring of the pantograph 1, a monitor 17 which monitors an output signal from the sensor 15, detects a failure in the pantograph 1.
