PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device that is improved in enlargement and has high contrast performance, in a multiplex optical modulation system where optical modulation elements are arranged in a multiplex manner. SOLUTION: A green light path is set to have a relay lens longer than that of another color light path, and a second optical modulation element is arranged on the green light path. Using the constitution, a multiple light system is achieved without requiring two relay lenses, namely an illumination relay lens and an image forming relay lens, and the small projection type display device having high contrast performance is provided.
