<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel amorphous silica which can be blended into a cosmetic to impart excellent and long-lasting soft focus performance to the cosmetic, and to provide a method for producing the same. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The amorphous silica has a primary particle size of 18 to 50 nm as measured by a small angle X-ray scattering method, and each particle of the amorphous silica has a circularity of 0.70 to 0.85 as observed with an electron microscope.
