The method involves arranging a particle sensor (16) in an internal combustion engine (10), where a signal (PM-Mes) of the particle sensor exhibits a cross-sensitivity in relation to water drop entry (14) into an exhaust gas channel (12) of the engine. A temporal rise of the particle sensor signal is determined and compared with a signal rise threshold value (ScW1), and a measure (n-WaTro, Vol-WaTro, m-WaTro) for the water drop entry is provided after exceeding the threshold value. The measure for the water drop quantity is computed based on summation of determined water drop volumes.
