<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a preferable result when a predetermined color obtained under various situations are converted so as to form a color image within a color reproduction range of a device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The color converting apparatus converts image data in a first color representation form into image data in a second color representation form. Colors are converted based on different criteria for a first area including a hue angle representing a predetermined reference color on an a*b* plane in an L*a*b* color space and a second area set within an area having a smaller hue angle than the above hue angle.
