<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently use a recording medium when recording TV programs in a video recording and playback device. <P>SOLUTION: A BD recorder (Blue Ray Disc Recorder: video recording and playback device) which can record TV programs on an optical disc, is connected to a TV receiver through a HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cable, if power of the BD recorder is turned on (S1), detects that it is connected to the TV receiver, and performs HDMI authentication processing (S2). Afterward, the BD recorder performs a device information request to the TV receiver, and acquires the device information (EDID: Extended Display Identification Data) (S3). The BD recorder acquires information of a screen size of the TV receiver 2 (information of a number of inches of the screen, etc.) (S4) from the device information (EDID), and performs processing to set a recording mode (S5) while calculating the recording mode of picture recording quality corresponding to the TV receiver using the acquired screen size information.
