There is disclosed a honeycomb structure which has a large effective filter area and which has an only small pressure loss when a fluid passes through the structure. The honeycomb structure comprises a porous honeycomb base material, and porous plugging portions 21 disposed so as to close open frontal areas of predetermined cells 2 in one end surface 11 and open frontal areas of the remaining cells in the other end surface. The plugging portions 21 disposed in at least the one end surface have a bottomed tubular shape to open inside the cells 2 and to close the open frontal areas of the cells 2, the average thickness of the walls of the tubular portions of the bottomed tubular plugging portions 21 is from 0.1 to 0.3 times a width W of each cell in a cross section of each plugging portion crossing the central axis thereof at right angles, a length Ha of each tubular portion 22 in a central axis direction thereof is from 0.3 to 0.8 times a length Hb of the plugging portion 21 in the central axis direction thereof, and a tip portion 24a of a space portion 24 formed in the plugging portion 21 has an outwardly convex circular shape with a radius of 0.5 mm or more in the cross section of the plugging portion 21 including the central axis thereof.
