Beta-naphthol is separated from mixtures containing it and beta-dialkylmethylnaphthalenes, such as are obtainable by the cleavage of hydroperoxides, by treating the mixture with a two-phase solvent consisting of a polar solvent for beta-naphthol mixed with a paraffin hydrocarbon. The layers are separated and the lower-boiling polar solvent distilled off. In an example, a continuous process for the separation with a mixture of methanol and paraffin naphtha of boiling range 100 DEG below that of the b -naphthol mixture containing isopropyl-naphthalene, in counter-current, is described; similar separations using a mixture containing b - sec. - butylnaphthalene solvent mixtures containing cyclohexane, methyl cyclohexane, ethanol, ethylene glycol, b -b 1-oxydipropionitrile, nitromethane, aqueous methylamine and ethanolamine and single-stage extractions are also referred to. Non-phenolic constituents are recovered from the hydrocarbon phase.
|
