The present invention provides a safe and effective process for the selective oxidation of a 5-O-protected-LLF-28249-alpha compound to the corresponding 23-keto compound of formula I wherein R is a protecting group. The present invention also provides the use of the selective oxidation process in the manufacture of moxidectin.
