PURPOSE: A device and a method for supporting handover in an optimized base station in a broadband wireless communication system using a multi hop relay method are provided to enable a terminal to not change control information used in communication with a serving node and continuously use the control information in communication with a target node, thereby providing a continuous service to the terminal. CONSTITUTION: A serving RS(Relay Station) forwards a handover indication message to a terminal(213). If it is handover in the same base station, the terminal omits a process for generating a key using at a target RS(215). The terminal transmits a ranging request message for communication with the target RS to the target RS(217). The serving RS forwards the ranging request message to a base station(219). The terminal transmits and receives data through the target RS(227).
