PURPOSE: A method for establishing a P2P(Peer to Peer) overlay network, a terminal for the P2P overlay network and a method and an apparatus for managing the P2P overlay network are provided to reduce control message overhead by allowing each peer to participate in only a tree overlay or a mesh overlay. CONSTITUTION: A mesh overlay management unit(920) creates a mesh join response message including a list of at least one peer for establishing mesh connection and a new peer among peers in a mesh overlay. A tree overlay management unit(930) generates a tree join response message including an address for establishing tree connection and a tree candidate peer among the peers in a tree overlay. A tree overlay optimizer(950) controls the depth of the tree overlay.
