PURPOSE: A method and a device for preparing high purity sponge zirconium are provided to prepare zirconium of sponge form having mechanical property and thermal conductivity similar to stainless steel and titanium materials. CONSTITUTION: A method for preparing high purity sponge zirconium comprises the steps of: blocking heat transfer to a top container in a chamber through a cooling circulation unit located on the outer wall of the top container in order to prevent zirconium tetrachloride powder in the top container from being vaporized, vaporizing the zirconium tetrachloride powder in the top container to react with liquid magnesium, removing the zirconium oxide remaining in the top container, and heating the reaction product to vaporize and remove the remaining magnesium and magnesium chloride.
