FIELD: chemistry; biochemistry. ^ SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to genetically modified yeast which independently produces cholesterol from a simple carbon source. The said yeast expresses 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase and 3-hydroxysterine ö24-reductase enzymes, while the sterol 24-C-methyltransferase enzyme is inactive. Cholesterol production of the said yeast is equal to or greater than 20% of all produced sterines.
