The mechanism has a drive carriage (40) provided with three guiding elements (42-46) cooperating with a fourth guiding element in a closed position and during pivoting movements of a cover (30) and with a fifth guiding element during displacement movement of the cover. The fourth guiding element is formed as a bar guide (361). The fifth guiding element is designed as control slide (362) or control cam. A part of the first and second guiding elements is externally engaged with the fourth guiding element as soon as the third guiding element engages with the fifth guiding element. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle roof with an openable cover.
