PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of easily detecting a deviation in the width direction of a printing tape and correcting the deviation to carry out printing. SOLUTION: In a tape printer, a light emitting part 110 irradiates infrared light toward a transparent film tape 81 which is a medium to be printed, and a light receiving part 120 receives the infrared light transmitted through the transparent film tape 81. A position detecting mark 82 is attached to a predetermined position in the width direction of the transparent film tape 81. The position detecting mark 82 is formed of an absorptive infrared ink that absorbs infrared light selectively. The light receiving quantity in the light receiving part 120 thereby depends on a position in the width direction of the transparent film tape 81. The tape printer determines the quantity of deviation from a reference position in the width direction of the transparent film tape 81 based on the light receiving quantity of the light receiving part 120, and corrects a printing position with the quantity of deviation as the quantity of correction.
