PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display which does not deteriorate visibility, as much as possible, under intensive external light such as direct sunlight in the outdoors and restrains the liquefaction of liquid crystal. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display includes; a liquid crystal panel 5; an illumination device (backlight 6) which irradiates the liquid crystal panel 5 with light; a cooler 3 for cooling the liquid crystal panel 5; an estimation part which estimates whether the display surface of the liquid crystal panel 5 is continuously irradiated with external light of at least prescribed level for a prescribed period; and a luminance-controlling part which makes the luminance level of the illumination device lower than a normally set level, when the estimation part estimates that the display surface of the liquid crystal panel 5 is continuously irradiated with the external light of at least prescribed illuminance for the prescribed period, when the temperature at a position, at which the liquid crystal display is installed, is lower than the lowest operation-guaranteed temperature for the cooler.
