PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus and an image forming method for reliably separating a transfer material from a transfer belt after transfer even when a liquid developer is used, and forming an image more satisfactorily. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprises: photoreceptors 2Y, 2M, 2C, 2K; development units 5Y, 5M, 5C, 5K developing latent images of the photoreceptors with a liquid developer so as to form images on the photoreceptors; an intermediate transfer belt 8 to which the image of each photoreceptor is transferred; a secondary transfer roller 14 having a gripper 18 for gripping the transfer material provided at a recessed part 17, and applied with a transfer bias to transfer the images of the intermediate transfer belt to the transfer material; a fixing unit fixing each image transferred to the transfer material; and a control unit to stop the transfer roller so that, in the rotary direction of the secondary transfer roller in the recessed part, the rear side wall 17a is tilted downward toward the opening edge 17d of the recessed part.
