Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for adjusting the sleep mode of a mobile station, which solve the problem in current multi-hop relay systems of long time delays in data transmission caused when packet errors force data packets to wait for the next listening window to reach the mobile station. A relay device determines whether the network device of the previous hop needs to retransmit data packets to the mobile station; when said network device of the previous hop needs to retransmit data packets to said station, the relay device transmits to said station the adjustment related information to adjust the sleep mode of said station. Said station adjusts the sleep mode according to said adjustment related information. Preferably, said adjustment related information comprises information instructing said station to assume at a preset period a state in which listening can be triggered. In addition, the relay device can also report said adjustment related information to the network device of the previous hop. The technical solution provided by the present invention enables shorter time delays, efficient use of wireless resources, and less demand on relay devices.
