720,953. Batteries. RUBEN, S. May 4, 1953, No. 12369/53. Class 53. A primary cell comprises aluminium and carbon electrodes and an electrolyte consisting of a solution of a halogen salt of manganese, nickel or cobalt. The Figure shows a cell comprising an aluminium cup 1 lined with paper and enclosing the depolarizer 4 of manganese dioxide and carbon black. The depolarizer and paper lining are moistened with a solution of manganous chloride containing a small quantity of borax. A fluted carbon rod 3 is provided with a metal cap 9 which also serves to close the cell. Gas can escape through a hole 10 in the cap 9. An absorbent paper disc 7 above a waxed paper disc 6 retains any electrolyte discharged above the depolarizer 4. The electrolyte may comprise a solution of the chloride, bromide or fluoride of manganese, nickel or cobalt with the addition of a borate and a corrosion inhibitor, e.g. potassium dichromate. The aluminium cup 1 may be provided with a large surface area by sintering, etching, spraying or other process and may be perforated and enclosed in a metal or plastic case. |
