PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an approved approach for caching results of queries within a self-organizing, distributed overlay network, which allows for a reduction of lookup path length and traffic within the network. SOLUTION: In a method for distributing in a self-organizing, distributed overlay network a reference to an object associated with a node in the network, a current node storing the reference receives a query for the object. The number of received queries for the object is determined and in case the number of received queries for the object reaches a predefined threshold, the reference is distributed in the network.
