<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens, and the like, which is advantageous to downsizing and achieving a wide view angle/a high variable power ratio and suitable for an electronic imaging element with the image quality of a pick-up image maintained in a superior manner. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The zoom lens includes, in the order starting from the object side to the image side, a negative first lens group, a positive second lens group, a negative third lens group, and a positive fourth lens group. On scaling from a wide-angle edge to a telephotographic edge, at least the first lens group, the second lens group, and the third lens group are moved, and distances between the respective lens groups are changed. The second lens group includes, in order from the object side, a first sub-group having positive refracting power, a second sub-group having negative refracting power, and a third sub-group having positive refracting power. The object side faces and the image side faces of the first sub-group, the second sub-group, and the third sub-group are brought into contact with air, respectively, and satisfy a conditional expression (1) 3.2<(β<SB>2t</SB>/β<SB>2w</SB>)/(β<SB>3t</SB>/β<SB>3w</SB>)<7, where β<SB>2t</SB>is a lateral magnification at the telephotographic edge of the second lens group, β<SB>2w</SB>is a lateral magnification at the wide-angle edge of the second lens group, β<SB>3t</SB>is a lateral magnification at the telephotographic edge of the third lens group, and β<SB>3w</SB>is a lateral magnification at the wide-angle edge of the third lens group.
