PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain an apparatus and a method of performing validity determination processing of an apparatus-specific key stored in the information processing apparatus, and notifying the results to a user. SOLUTION: Processing to determine whether an apparatus-specific key, i.e., a key specific to the information processing apparatus which is applied to reproduction or recording of media storage content, is valid or invalid is carried out. More specifically, the data for determining validity of a key are received externally, validity determination processing of the apparatus-specific key are carried out by applying the data for determining validity of a key according to the user instruction, and the determination results are output. The data for determining validity of a key are constituted of the newest MKB or the newest list of disabled devices, or a diagnostic program containing these data. The information processing apparatus determines validity of an apparatus-specific key stored in the local apparatus by using the newest data at an arbitrary timing, and can notify the results to a user.
