<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preventive function of sealing part damage due to grooves, without impairing a mechanical strength of core rods formed with the grooves, in a high pressure discharge lamp in which the grooves are formed on the electrode core rods sealed embeddedly into the sealing parts, respectively. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This high pressure discharge lamp includes: a discharge vessel with the sealing parts adjacent to both ends of a light emitting part; and electrodes 1 having electrode tip parts 2 arranged opposedly in the inside of the light emitting part and the core rods 3 attached with the tip parts and embedded into the sealing parts respectively. The grooves in the axial direction are formed on a part of a surface of the each core rods 3. A diameter D measured at groove bottom parts of the grooves 7 of the core rods is larger than a diameter d of the core rods in a part where no grooves are formed. Ž<P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT Ž
