PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To comparatively easily generate instructions to find an image having predetermined composition. SOLUTION: An object name list 51 is formed on the left side of an image-search window 50, and an image area 54 for retrieval is formed almost on the whole of the window. When desired object names 52 and 53 are dragged from the object name list 51 and dropped on the image area 54 for retrieval, the component images 61-63 which correspond to the object names 52 and 53, are displayed on the image area 54 for retrieval. The positions and sizes of the component images 61-63 corresponding to the object names 52 and 53, are changed to desired positions and sizes. Instructions are given to an image database to find images which include objects having the combinations of objects identified by the component images 61-63, which are displayed on the image area 54 for retrieval, having the same sizes as the component images 61-63, and existing in the positions.
