PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device preventing an electrode material from being partially deposited by suppressing steady formation of convection in a discharge lamp, and suppressing deformation of an electrode protrusion, a driving method of the discharge lamp, and a projector. SOLUTION: This discharge lamp lighting device includes a discharge lamp driving part to drive the discharge lamp 90 by supplying an AC driving current I to the discharge lamp 90, a memory part 44 to memorize a holding time in which at least the AC driving current I continues while having the same polarity as a drive parameter specifying the AC driving current I, and a control part 40 to control the discharge lamp driving part based on the drive parameter memorized in the memory part 44. The control part 40 selects the holding time from a value within a first range by given probability based on a given time condition, and controls the discharge lamp driving part based on the value of the selected holding time.
