PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display which can provide a proper lighting state. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display 10 has an active matrix substrate 41 on which a pixel electrode is formed; a lead-wiring 22 which is formed on the active matrix substrate 41; a counter substrate 46 which is formed facing the active matrix substrate 41; and a counter electrode 61, which is formed on the counter substrate 46. On the main surface 41a of the active matrix substrate 41, a display area 31 and a nondisplay area 32 arranged adjacent to the display area 31 are defined. The lead-wiring 22 is arranged in the nondisplay area 32. The counter electrode 61 has an active portion 62 which is arranged facing the display area 31 and a surrounding portion 63, which is arranged facing the nondisplay area 32 and which is electrically insulated from the active portion 62.
