PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine capable of effectively restricting outbreaks of torque fluctuation, output, fuel economy and deterioration of emission over the whole of the internal combustion engine by restricting combustion failures in groups of cylinders due to control abnormality in a variable valve timing mechanism of any group of cylinders. SOLUTION: In the case wherein any one of variable mechanisms 52 of both of a right and a left banks 12 and 14 is failed to an advance angle side or a retard angle side, control of ignition timing and fuel injection quantity to the group of cylinders on a failed side is switched to the control using an emergency map corresponding to a real angle of displacement of intake cam shafts 40 and 42 to be changed by the failed variable mechanism 52.
