PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve gear of an internal combustion engine with a structure which can sufficiently discharge working oil from a retarded hydraulic pressure chamber or an advanced hydraulic pressure chamber of a valve timing variable mechanism. SOLUTION: The variable valve gear is provided with the valve timing variable mechanism 50, a first hydraulic pressure controlling device which controls the valve timing variable mechanism 50 by hydraulic pressure, and a locking mechanism which mutually fixes an input rotor 51 and a vane rotor 60. The valve timing is varied in a range between a maximum retarded angle INVTmin and a maximum advanced angle INVTmax by operating the vane rotor 60 between a standard retarded phase LAsbk and a maximum advanced phase LAmad by the first hydraulic pressure controlling device. Then, a discharge oil passage 77 which discharges the hydraulic oil of the retarded hydraulic oil pressure chamber 64 to the outside when the vane rotor 60 is at the retarded angle side from the standard retarded phase LAsbk is installed.
