The engine (1) has an exhaust gas turbocharger (6) with a compressor (6b) that is arranged in a common suction line (2) supplying fresh air and/or fresh mixture to the engine. A compressor (7b) of the turbocharger is arranged downstream of the compressor (6b) in the common suction line. A bypass line (15) is provided for by-passing the compressor (6b), where the bypass line discharges fresh air and/or fresh mixture into the common suction line downstream of the compressor (6b). The compressor (6b) of the turbocharger is an axial compressor/mixed-flow compressor (12). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a charged internal-combustion engine.
