The device has a positioning unit (7) for positioning a workpiece (4') to be forged or deformed in a plate area (55) of a forging system or a forging machine. A grip device i.e. grip tool, grips the workpiece during unloading the workpiece. The positioning unit includes two position elements (7A) that are linearly displaceable in a positioning direction (V) between operating positions. The positioning unit includes a linear actuator (9) arranged perpendicular to the direction. The direction runs perpendicular to a motion direction or drive direction (S) of a forging tool. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a forging system for forging metallic or metalliferous workpieces, including a positioning stopper (2) a method for automatic forging of metallic or metalliferous workpieces.
