<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an isolated cell-wall associated extracellular matrix-binding protein of Staphylococcus aureus and an active fragment thereof: and to provide a method for preventing, diagnosing, treating or monitoring the progress of therapy for bacterial infections caused by the Staphylococcus aureus. <P>SOLUTION: There are provided the isolated extracellular matrix-binding protein designated ClfB, SdrC, SdrD and SdrE, and corresponding amino acid and nucleic acid sequences and motifs thereof.
