PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machining device capable of machining a workpiece with a desired accuracy while improving the operation efficiency by rapidly and accurately detecting relative positions of the workpiece and a tool, and a machining method using the same. SOLUTION: The device includes a position measuring machine which measures relative positions of an axial reference plane 6 of a workpiece W and a grinding wheel by bringing a contact part 78 into contact with the reference plane 6. Both centers 21 and 67 are configured so as to be slidable between a relative position measurement position where the workpiece W can contact with the contact part 78 and a chuck position where the workpiece W is chucked by a work drive mechanism 26 along the axial direction of the workpiece W.
