A cell for use in spectroscopy of the kind in which one wall is movable to adjust the gap between the walls has a wedge member or members arranged for movement in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the movable wall to effect such movement. As shown, the movable cell wall 17, for example of rock salt, is supported by screws 9 carried by a plate 20 attached to a member 14 sliding within a body 1 to which the fixed wall 6 of the cell is attached. The lower surface 27 of the member 14 is conical and rests upon the inclined ends of f bridge members 24 supported by a base plate 32 and urged outwardly by springs 25 so that their ends are pressed against the conical inner surface 29 of a barrel member 28 engaging a screw thread 2 on the outer face of the body 1. Rotation of the barrel 28 causes it to traverse the screw thread 2, whereby the conical surface 29 causes sliding movement of the wedges which themselves slide the member 14 within the body 1 to vary the gap between the plates 6, 17. The barrel 28 may be calibrated at 35 to indicate the width of the gap. A metal bellows 22 completes the cell, access to which, for the introduction of liquids, is attained through apertures normally closed by screws 13. |
