PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for locating a device in a network having a source device which is connected to a network path to which a destination device is attached. SOLUTION: A documentation system includes a port which includes an electronic module with an identification code on the network path. The destination device includes an electronic module with an identification code. The source device sends along the network path the query signals addressed to the port and the destination device corresponding to the network path. The electronic module of the data port responds to the query addressed to the data port and transmits its identification code to the source device. A processor and a switch are in communication with the source device. The processor and the switch send the query signals to instruct the source device to interpret the responses.
