PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a start control device for restraining reduction in startability in a cylinder direct-injection internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: This start control device has a fuel injection valve for directly injecting fuel into a cylinder of the internal combustion engine, a temperature acquiring means for acquiring the temperature of the internal combustion engine or the temperature of intake air sucked in the cylinder, a cranking speed variable means capable of varying a cranking speed when starting the internal combustion engine, and a control means for determining the existence of the possibility of self-igniting the fuel in the cylinder after starting the cranking based on the temperature acquired by the temperature acquiring means, when performing the cranking when starting the internal combustion engine and controlling the cranking speed variable means so as to reduce the cranking speed in at least the first cycle of cranking when determined that there is the possibility of self-ignition.
