<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide radio equipment for improving the degree of freedom of system construction by making the functions of a master unit and a slave unit exchangeable in an event type bidirectional radio system using weak radio waves, and a radio communication system. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The radio equipment includes a storing part for storing an operational mode for specifying whether the radio equipment operates as a master unit or operates as a slave unit, wherein a control part sets, during initialization in system construction, the operational mode to the slave unit, and when a switching operation is performed within a fixed time thereafter, switches the operational mode to set the operational mode to the master unit, when the operational mode is set to the master unit, performs intermittent reception to wait for a signal from a slave unit, performs an operation corresponding to the signal upon receiving the signal from the slave unit, and if the operational mode is set to the slave unit, normally performs transmission when a specific event occurs in a sleep state.
