<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for detecting black smoke and soot dust in a water heater for accurately detecting generation of soot dust and black smoke and an accumulation state of soot dust. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The water circulated in a heat exchanger is heated to be warm water by a combustion gas generated by combustion of a combustion burner, and an exhaust gas after the heat exchange is discharged through an exhaust pathway. In the exhaust pathway, a light emitting element emitting the light, and a light receiving element receiving the emitted light and determining the intensity of light are disposed. Thus the generation of soot dust, the generation of black smoke, and the accumulation state is easily detected with a simple constitution by determining the intensity of light. As the generation of sooth dust and black smoke are detected before the exhaust pathway is blocked, the repair is inexpensively performed only by cleaning and adjusting combustion without bringing a major accident and extensive repair, and the water heater is safely used at all times.
