A process for producing spheroidal graphite cast iron comprises adding to a grey iron mix an effective spheroidal graphite forming proportion of an agent consisting of an alloy or compound of calcium capable of introducing calcium into the mix without formation of calcium carbide. The agent may be calcium silicide or calcium silicide and calcium fluoride, with or without the addition of zirconium, aluminium, or titanium. Alloys such as zirconium-ferro-silicon, titanium-calcium-silicon, and a 50-50 alloy of aluminium and calcium silicon may be used. The agent is best used in a finely-divided state. Reference is also made to the use of an alloy consisting of 6 per cent calcium, 50 per cent silicon, 10 per cent titanium and the balance iron as the agent.
