[Also in Group XXXIV] In a tractor brake latch mechanism applicable to a brake pedal and comprising co-operating pawl and toothed rack components, of which the rack is rigidly secured to the pedal and the pawl is pivotally mounted in a stationary location, a manually operable control lever, movable by the driver into a latching setting and an unlatching setting, is connected with the pawl to force the pawl into engagement with the rack and out of engagement with the rack, alternatively according to the setting of the control lever. Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate the rearwardly extending brake pedal 6 in its inoperative or " off " position. A casing 11 is adapted to be secured to the tractor and houses a hand control lever 15 which is operatively associated with a spring biassing device 16 to 21 which is applied to a pawl 9 pivoted to a bracket 22, secured to a stop 8 fixed to the tractor, and which functions with a tumblerswitch action. The pawl 9 co-operates with a ratchet-toothed rack plate 10 rigidly secured to the brake pedal 6. In operation, when the tractor driver wishes to perform the braking and latching operation, he depresses the pedal 6 against the action of a spring (not shown), which holds the pedal against the stop 8, so as to apply the brakes adequately. Then, simultaneously he moves the hand control lever 15 to the opposite end of the slot 14 and the pawl 9 is pivoted to engage with the teeth of the rack plate 10. The brake pedal 6 is then securely latched against upward movement and can only be unlatched by forward return movement of the hand control lever 15. A modification is described and illustrated in which the invention is adapted for use on tractors with a forwardly extending brake pedal 6 ; this includes a modification to the spring biassing device 16 to 21. |
