733,623. Making belts from plastic material. RUBBER IMPROVEMENT, Ltd., and LEWIS, J. July 1, 1953 [April 4, 1952], No. 8644/52. Class 87 (2). In a method for the edge moulding of plastic belts and the like, (made e.g. of an elastomer type of vinyl, vinylidene, vinyl formal, vinylbutyral, vinyl alcohol, ethylene, amide or sulphide polymer) the belt edge is covered with a similar or different mouldable plastic material, comprising an extruded section, a sheet material, or a paste, which is spotwelded at points along the edge or is held in position by material such as adhesive plastic film, thin aluminium, or by a metal former, after which the prepared edges are introduced into open moulds 8 hinged at 10, having sliding edges 11 allowing for the edge thickness, and mounted on frame members 1A, 1B. Member IB slides on shafts 2 fixed to member 1A, its distance from member. 1A being adjusted by bolts 7 engaging nuts on member 1B and driven by sprockets 4 and 6. In operation, the moulds are closed, pressure is applied, e.g. by a hand-screw, to the sides and a heating fluid circulated through the apertures 9. When finished the moulds are cooled by introducing cooling fluid while still under pressure or, where plastic film, thin aluminium, or a metal former is used, the belt section may be removed while still hot. |
