<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display device and a video display method which, when lighting is required for an illuminating means illuminating a video display panel, always stably irradiate the video display panel with illuminating light having optimum luminance or chromaticity and prevent variation in image quality and which are sufficiently suitable for practical use. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The video display device includes the display panel (14a) forming display video based on a video signal, the illuminating means (14b) causing video display to be performed by irradiating the display panel (14a) with illuminating light, and a control means (63, 63e, 63f) which, when irradiation with illuminating light is requested to the illuminating means (14b), corrects at least one of illuminance and chromaticity of illuminating light applied from the illuminating means (14b) based on a lighting time and a putting-out time of the illuminating means (14b) before the point of time of the request.
