PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide perfectly spherical fine particles of a sulfide or complex sulfide of at least one element selected from molybdenum (Mo), rhodium (Rh), ruthenium (Ru) and rhenium (Re). SOLUTION: The objective perfectly spherical sulfide or complex sulfide is produced by bringing a mixture containing at least one compound containing an element selected from Mo, Rh, Ru and Re and a sulfur material in a solvent which is an alcohol, a saturated hydrocarbon, xylene, benzene or water into a solvothermal reaction or a hydrothermal reaction.
